Trade agreements and sector rules for Russian investors

CA Utsav Dogra, Chartered Accountant, ICAI M. No. 542375 · Updated

In brief

There is no India–Russia free trade agreement in force. Foreign investment from Russia is on the automatic route in most sectors. Russian investors are most active in energy and fertilisers, defence-related manufacturing (with approvals), pharmaceuticals.

What is specific to Russian companies

No trade agreement is in force; dual-use and financing restrictions can block supplies even where Indian law allows them.

Sectors

  • Energy and fertilisers
  • Defence-related manufacturing (with approvals)
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Trading

A trade agreement does not change FDI caps, FEMA pricing or RBI reporting.
